The professional may also be required to influence an institute’s medical equipment purchases and healthcare practices. This is to help the institute select cost-effective medical equipment and supplies while holding responsibility for deciding that these materials can be thoroughly sterilized before coming into contact with patients. Part of these duties include the actual sterilization of equipment, packing them carefully and appropriately, labeling them correctly and preparing them for scheduled and emergency use for professional nurses and doctors in a hospital or other medical environment. A sterile processing professional takes all responsibility for the cleanliness and sterilization of the equipment and ensure the sterility is preserved from his or her possession to the moment it comes in contact with the patient. The sterile processing profession must be committed to safety to ensure that patients and health care workers do not come in contact with unclean equipment with no risk of infections that can possibly spread following contact with contaminated medical equipment.

In order to work in sterile processing, one must successfully complete the International Association of Health and Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) exam to achieve the Central Service Technician Certificate.
